Matte vs. Gloss Versions

The only difference between the Matte and Gloss versions is the black ink. The matte black ink will produce darker and more durable barcodes on matte paper, matte polypropylene, and matte GHS BS5609-compliant chemical labels. The color inks are all the same.

Thus, if you need to produce GHS BS6509-compliant labels, then the matte version is best. If you want to produce glossy polypropylene, glossy polyester, or clear labels, then the glossy black ink will bond better with these materials. Note that you can still print glossy polypropylene, polyester materials with the matte version by changing the printer driver’s setting to print black using CMY inks. However, this increases your ink cost since the printer uses three different colors versus a single black color.

Because of the different ink properties, you'll need to use the correct labels with your Epson CW-C4000 color label printer. For example, if you have the matte CW-C4000, use matte paper, matte polypropylene, or matte GHS chemical labels. In contrast, if you have the gloss CW-C4000 printer, use high gloss paper or high gloss polypropylene labels. The Epson CW-C4000 can handle label media ranging from 1.0” to 4.41” for roll-fed media and 2.0” – 4.41 for fan-folded media. This color label printer uses Epson PrecisionCore TFP printhead technology, allowing for ultra-sharp text and precise barcodes. This color label printer has a maximum print resolution of 1200 dpi and can reach print speeds of nearly 3.94 ips (inches per second), allowing for high production rates and fast turnarounds. The printer's Epson Ultra Chrome DL pigment inks allow for vibrant, accurate colors, smooth gradations, fine image details, and durable labels.

The Epson CW-C4000 includes a built-in cutter and 2.7-inch full-color graphic display. Powerful remote management tools enable the CW-C4000 to be used in large enterprises. Epson CW-C4000 Ink Cartridges

The Epson CW-C4000 uses pigmented ink cartridges that produce vivid and vibrant colors. These printers use a four-color ink system including cyan, magenta, yellow and black -- all in individual ink cartridges. This ensures that the labels produced are of high quality with accurate color reproduction while also making the printer more cost-effective since you only need to replace individual ink cartridges when they run out.

Though both versions of the CW-C4000 color label printer use the same cyan, magenta, and yellow pigment ink cartridges, the black ink cartridge used in the matte version is optimized for extra durability and waterproofing. In contrast, gloss black ink is formulated for glossy media, which typically requires a different type of ink.

It's important to choose the correct black cartridge for the version of the printer you are using (either matte or gloss) since the matte and gloss ink cartridges are not interchangeable.

Epson CW-C4000 Label Types

The Epson CW-C4000 and the Epson TM-C3500 use the same type of labels. The CW-C4000 replaced the TM-C3500 label printer. As such, this new printer can use all the TM-C3500 labels as well as the new CW-C4000 labels. The CW-C4000 holds label rolls in the front up to 4” OD and uses fan-folded labels from behind.

In addition, you can use larger 3” Core / 6” OD label rolls by using an external C4000 label unwinder (part number SCT-9945; sold separately). The SCT-99451 label unwinder can hold label rolls up to 8” OD and sits behind the CW-C4000 printer, giving you access to a large selection of labels that can be used with the CW-C4000 inkjet color label printer.

Epson Spare-in-the-Air Warranty

The Epson CW-C4000 comes with a standard one-year depot repair warranty, where you must ship the printer to the nearest Epson service depot for warranty repairs. Once repaired, Epson ships it back to you. You are responsible for the shipping cost to the Epson service depot for the depot warranty.
